DESCRIPTION

The site for this home offers a unique and picturesque setting, nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the natural beauty of Table Mountain and Oudekraal National Reserve. With the iconic 12 Apostles mountain range as a backdrop, the location provides breathtaking views and a serene environment.

In response to the site's characteristics, the design approach focuses on several key aspects. Firstly, the aim is to maximise the sea views to the North West, taking advantage of the stunning ocean vistas.  Strategic placement of windows and,  balconies and covered terraced that offer unobstructed views of the ocean and create a strong visual connection between the interior spaces and the natural surroundings.

Another important consideration is the protection from winds, which predominantly come from the South East. The design of the home takes into account the site's exposure to wind and incorporates measures to minimise its impact. This involves careful positioning of the building, the use of windbreaks, landscaping elements, and the selection of appropriate materials that can withstand the elements.

Building orientation plays a significant role in optimizing the site's potential. By carefully considering the position of the home in relation to the sun's path and prevailing winds, the design aims to create a comfortable and energy-efficient living environment. This may involve strategic placement of windows and shading devices to control natural light and heat gain, as well as the use of passive design strategies to enhance natural ventilation and minimize the need for artificial cooling.

To ensure privacy and create a sense of sanctuary, the design incorporates careful massing and positioning of vegetation.

The concept of the house as a steel box with a raised bedroom wing and a concrete box element for the living and entertainment spaces demonstrates a contemporary and minimalist design approach. The elevated bedroom wing allows for the maximisation of the garden and outdoor space while providing a sense of privacy and separation from the public areas. The concrete box element, which houses the living and entertainment spaces, provides a solid and robust structure while also offering opportunities for open and spacious interior layouts.

Overall, the design of the home aims to create a harmonious connection between the sea, the mountain, and the home.  By maximising views, protecting from winds, carefully considering building orientation, and using strategic massing and landscaping, the design seeks to establish a private sanctuary that embraces the natural surroundings and offers a tranquil and immersive living experience
