DESCRIPTION

The incorporation of a large-scale residential development with 580 apartments into the leafy suburb of Cantonments in Accra, Ghana presented a significant challenge. To address this challenge, the design approach focused on creating a sense of community and managing the scale of the buildings within the context of the neighborhood.

The design concept involved organizing the development into three separate developments, each centered around a communal square. This approach helps break down the scale of the buildings and creates a more manageable and human-scale environment. The communal squares act as focal points for social interaction and community engagement, enhancing the overall livability of the development.

Of the three squares, the central square takes on a larger scale and is designed as an urban "park." This central square serves as a gathering space for residents, offering green spaces, seating areas, and amenities that encourage social interaction and outdoor activities. By designing it as a park, the square provides a valuable public space that contributes to the quality of life within the development and enhances the overall urban experience.

Additionally, the design of the squares as communal spaces adds a layer of greenery and enhances the aesthetic appeal of the development. The integration of green spaces and landscape elements provides a connection to nature, creating a pleasant and inviting environment.
