DESCRIPTION

This sloping corner site located at the base of Table Mountain, just above the City Bowl, presents a unique context with a mix of four and five-story apartment blocks and smaller single residential Victorian houses. To address the slope and varied surroundings, the design approach proposes a contemporary expression of the traditional 'Row House' in the form of four semi-detached units.

The intention behind this design concept is to create a more engaging and active street edge, which is often lacking in newer developments. By adopting a row house typology, the design seeks to promote a sense of urban vitality and interaction. The semi-detached units contribute to a cohesive streetscape while offering individuality and variety in architectural expression.

The stepping of the units down the slope not only responds to the topography but also creates an undulating roofscape. This roofscape design presents an opportunity to incorporate skylights to each of the mezzanine levels. The skylights provide natural light and frame picture views of Signal Hill, enhancing the visual experience within the units and creating a connection to the surrounding landscape.

By embracing the traditional row house concept, the design creates a sense of continuity with the existing fabric of the neighborhood, particularly with the Victorian houses. The contemporary expression of the row houses adds a fresh and modern touch, bridging the gap between the historical context and the present.

Overall, the design proposal for the sloping corner site aims to contribute to the streetscape with a contemporary interpretation of the row house typology. The stepped arrangement accommodates the slope, creates an interesting roofscape, and provides opportunities for skylights and views. This approach not only adds to the visual appeal of the development but also fosters a more engaging and active street edge, enriching the urban experience in this location.
